There are active modding groups for the WRT54G and related devices. These devices are Linux based, and Linksys released the sources to fulfil their obligations under the GPL. DD-WRT is simply a project which is based on the official GPL Sources of Sveasoft Alchemy. Most Powerful firmware around OpenWrt is dedicated to creating and maintaining an up-to-date Linux distro for the WRT. There are also guides at this site to adding extra storage, serial ports and other hardware devices. This is not for the faint of heart or weak of bowel. Tomato Firmware is a small, lean and simple replacement firmware. v1.0 – v4.0 devices were based on a Linux platform from CyberTAN. v5.0 is VxWorks based. Linksys have since re-released the old Linux based version as the WRT54GL. They are 100% identical to the original WRT54G v4.0 units. WRT54G H/W Version Identification: It is now possible to run Linux on the WRT54G v5.0, with some caveats (ie, half the flash ROM and RAM of true Linux models). Several third party firmwares such as DD-WRT micro already work. DD-WRT specific information on firmware compatibility for the various WRT54G/GS/GL hardware versions http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/in |
