I don't understand. I am not downloading music or video files or applications.. I am only downloading a jpg here or there.. certainly not Gigs worth of stuff.

However it just seems to fill up mysteriously?

btw where do the dmg files go?? are they hidden somewhere on my computer taking up precious space?

I am constantly having to move stuff to my external HD but something is still not adding up. I dont' know why I am clearing out heaps of stuff and it just fills up all the time.

Are there temporary files, hidden files? what.?? I just don't know. :(

Thanks.

Disk Inventory X is a disk usage utility for Mac OS X 10.3 (and later). It shows the sizes of files and folders in a special graphical way called "treemaps".

If you've ever wondered where all your disk space has gone, Disk Inventory X will help you to answer this question. www.derlien.com

Where do download everything to on your HD ?

Use one of these to scan your HDD, it'll tell you if there are any large files, or directories, that are taking up most of your space:

osx.iusethis.com/app/filelight
osx.iusethis.com/app/grandperspective
osx.iusethis.com/app/whatsize

Thanks . I used Disk Inventory X.
However, I have had a problem deleting some large files (usually application downloads). It has been telling me I have no permission.

However, I don't have multiple user accounts on this computer, I don't log in, I'm the only one who uses it.. why do I need permission?? and how do I go about deleting these files?

And what happens to DMG files once you eject them?

thanks.

They sit wherever you downloaded them until you actually delete them. Ejecting only unloads the disk image, it doesn't actually delete the image file itself.

They essentially disappear... Its like ejecting a CD, one its ejected from the system, it is no longer available to you unless you insert the CD again (mount the disk image again).

EDIT: what alf said... Beat me to it!

Are you accessing the DMGs while you are also trying to delete them? That would cause you to have no permission I think?

Correct, you can't delete something in use (well actually, there are caveats to this, but I won't go into that). It sounds to me like the OP hasn't actually installed the application at all?

Where did Disk Inventory X report all the usage was?

Thats what I was thinking... Common mistake made by those new to the mac that don't have someone to "show them around". I know, because I made the same mistake when I got my first mac!
